ALL Sections must be completed on the Visiting Associate Application before submitting to division for processing. Page 1 to be completed by visitor and Page 2 to be completed by sponsor or admin.
Please make sure the Visiting Associate Application is signed by Sponsor.
Email completed and signed visitor application with CV to the divisional office at least a month in advance, two or more months if foreign national.
REAPPOINTMENT PROCESS: Division will send a renewal request to sponsor 3 months before expiration; foreign national visitors appointments are started 6 months before expiration..

VISITING ASSOCIATE GUIDELINES:
Faculty or researchers associated with other institutions that expect to stay at Caltech more than one month must have official status at the Institute; they may be appointed to the rank of Visiting Associate for the purposes of study or research. A Visiting Associate must hold a faculty position or its equivalent outside Caltech or at JPL which is retained simultaneously with the Caltech appointment or to which the appointee will return upon completion of the Caltech appointment. The appointment may be part-time or full-time, with salary or without salary.
Visiting Associates are required to spend at least 30 days a year or more on the Caltech campus. The sponsor is responsible for making the appointee's visit to the institute mutually beneficial and interacting with the appointee through regular on-campus meetings and communications. The appointee's credentials must be such that would qualify them for Caltech voting faculty membership (not postdoctoral scholars or visiting graduate students) The appointee must hold a faculty position or its equivalent outside Caltech, which he/she retains simultaneously with the Caltech appointment and to which he/she can return upon completion of the Caltech appointment. This appointment must not be allowed to become an independent or quasi-independent research position at Caltech. If an international visitor requires a J1 visa, their salary must be above $48,000 annually or host will need to supplement to bring their salary up to $48,000 annually (for J1 visa purposes only).
Health insurance coverage is required. If visiting associate will be paid a minimum of $1,000/mo from Caltech funds, he/she is eligible for staff benefits. If visiting associate will be funded by an outside agency, make sure to add information to the application.
Length of appointment for visiting associate can be anywhere from one year up to three years at one time. The Appointments are not to exceed five years without a required IACC review.

For Visiting Associates Who are Retired from Another Institution

- Permit reappointments up to the next five-year review cycle
Visiting Associate Privileges:
- A "faculty" identification card that permits access to campus facilities.
- A listing in the catalog's alphabetical and divisional sections as well as in the personnel directory.
- JPL appointees only are permitted to be principal investigators or coinvestigators on sponsored research.
